  • The Aerospace Engineering Sciences graduate program was recently ranked by the National Research Council as high as #2 in the nation on the basis of their quality assessment metrics.
  • Delores Knipp, recently promoted to AES Research Professor, joins CCAR, broadening the research portfolio to include expertise in solar wind-magnetosphere-atmosphere linkages. Her new textbook, Understanding Space Weather and the Physics Behind It (McGraw Hill 2011) is in use at multiple universities (2013).
  • Jay McMahon was recently promoted to AES Assistant Research Professor (2013).
  • Jeff Thayer participated, as one of four panelists, in a Congressional Caucus on Space Technology on Capitol Hill sponsored by the American Chemical Society and the American Geophysical Union and partnered with the Senate Space and Technology Caucus (2013).
  • Lakshmi Kantha was elected Associate Fellow of AIAA (2013).
  • George Born received the College of Engineering and Applied Science Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award due to his outstanding contributions to the University of Colorado.(2013).
  • Hanspeter Schaub received the AIAA Summerfield Book award. The Summerfield Book Award is named in honor of Dr. Martin Summerfield, founder and initial editor of the Progress in Astronautics and Aeronautics series of books published by the AIAA. The award is presented to the author of the best book published within the last five years by the AIAA (2012).
  • Scott Palo and Xinlin Li directed the first successful launch of a CU CubeSat. The Colorado Student Space Weather Experiment (CSSWE) is a 3U CubeSat funded by the NSF and was launched September 13, 2012 into a 477 x 780 km, 65° orbit. Operating flawlessly, CSSWE regularly acquires data on the energetic particle population in low earth orbit. Over 60 students participated in the program (2012).
  • Daniel Scheeres was awarded the American Astronautical Society Dirk Brouwer Award, which recognizes outstanding lifetime contributions to the field of space flight mechanics and astrodynamics (2012).
  • Penina Axelrad received the Institute of Navigation Samuel Burka Award (2012).
  • William Emery was Elected Fellow of the American Astronautical Society (2012).
  • Hanspeter Schaub was awarded the prestigious University of Colorado Boulder Faculty Assembly Teaching Award (2012).
  • Jeff Thayer was awarded the College of Engineering Dean’s Award for Outstanding Research (2012).
  • William Emery was Elected Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (2012).
  • Jeff Thayer was awarded the Roubos Engineering Endowed Faculty Fellowship (2012).
  • Daniel Scheeres was recognized for his research receiving the College of Engineering Dean’s Award for Outstanding Research (2011).
  • Penina Axelrad was awarded the AIAAA Summerfield Book Award (2011).
  • Lakshmi Kantha was appointed an associate scientist at the Istituto di Scienze Marine (2010).
