Level 2 Data
Level 2 data files contain the higher level "science" products derived from the level 1A and level 1B data. These products are considred experimental and should be used with caution. The products include bistatic range to terrain (altimetry), surface roughness and associated ocean surface wind speeds, surface scattering coefficient derived from the direct and reflected SNR measurements, etc. HDF files can be opened natively in Matlab, IDL, or other HDF viewers. For an example code to open an HDF SD (multiple scientific data set) file in Matlab and return a structure see hdfsd2struct.m and a helpful unzipping function, gunzip_file.m
Naming convention: YYYYMMDD_a_76LC1_2.hdf.gz, where first eight digits are date, "a" is a letter "a-z" that describes the order in which the data sets were collected on a given day, "76" is a two-digit number that corresponds to the receiver software version, which are partially explained in this DMR version table, "L" is the left hand circular polarization (LHCP) of the reflected signal measured ("R" for RHCP, "m" for multiplexed versions (BAO only)), "C" is the GPS C/A code received ("P" for P-code), "1" is for the GPS L1 (1.57542 GHz) carrier received ("2" for L2 (1.2276 Gz)), "2" for level 2, "hdf" for HDF format, and "gz" for gzipped data. The data file can be unzipped with gzip or standard "zip" software.
